Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) has many uses. It is used in the production of paper, soap, dyes, rayon, metal smelting, petroleum refining, cotton finishing, coal tar product purification, food processing, wood processing and machinery industry.
It can be used as a chemical experiment. In addition to being used as a reagent, it can also be used as an alkaline desiccant because of its strong water absorption and deliquescent properties. Acidic gases can also be absorbed (for example, in experiments where sulfur is burned in oxygen, a sodium hydroxide solution can be bottled to absorb toxic sulfur dioxide).
Neutral and alkaline gases are mixed with CO, which can be removed by NaOH to form NaCO (sodium carbonate) and HO (the resulting NaCO is dissolved in HO).
In addition, in the production of dyes, plastics, chemicals and organic intermediates, the regeneration of old rubber, the production of metal sodium, water electrolysis and inorganic salt production, the production of borax, chromium salt, manganate, phosphate, etc., also need to use a lot of caustic soda. At the same time, sodium hydroxide is one of the important raw materials for the production of polycarbonate, super absorbent polymer, zeolite, epoxy resin, sodium phosphate, sodium sulfite and a large number of sodium salts.
Sodium hydroxide is widely used in water treatment. In wastewater treatment plants, sodium hydroxide can reduce the hardness of water through a neutralization reaction. In the industrial field, it is a regenerant for ion exchange resin regeneration. Sodium hydroxide is strongly alkaline and relatively soluble in water. Because sodium hydroxide has a relatively high solubility in water, it is easy to measure the amount and can be easily used in all areas of water treatment.
